The photo exhibition “Stories Left Untold”, curated by Budi Dharmawan, pictures forgotten and repressed memories from past periods in German and Indonesian history via a very personal quest for truth by two young photographers.
25 years after the reunification of Germany, the German part of this exhibition tells the story of former political prisoners of the German Democratic Republic (the former East Germany) who spent parts of their lives in detention at the infamous Hohenschönhausen prison in East Berlin – among them the father of Nora Scheidler. The photographer spent two years on the research for this compilation and was probably the last one to picture the original state of the second and third floor at Hohenschönhausen, before they were renovated and included in the public museum at the ground and first floor.
The Indonesian part of the exhibition documents the life story of Boentardjo Amaroen Kartowinoto – 50 years after his death. Only after Suhartos fall in 1998 photographer Rangga Purbaya, learned that his grandfather died in the massacres following the coup d’état in 1965. A fact that before was concealed by his family. The works will be exhibited at the iCAN Gallery in Yogyakarta. The exhibition is open for public.
